caron® big donut o'go™ knit color block pocket shawl

The pocket shawl has exploded in popularity. The perfect combination of comfort and style, this shawl features an on trend color block design using vibrant Caron® Big Donut O'Go™ yarn, while the contrast edges for pockets and coordinating fringe give added pops of detail.
Step 1

MEASUREMENTS: Approx 24” [61 cm] wide x 64” [162.5 cm] long, excluding fringe
GAUGE: 13 sts and 13 rows = 4” [10 cm] in Sc/Ch-1 Pat. Take time to check your gauge.
NOTES:
- To begin working with the O’Go format, carefully cut plastic tie where the ends of the O’Go meet.
- Pull tie to remove and start crocheting!
- To change yarns, work to last 2 loops on hook and draw new yarn through last 2 loops, then proceed.

Step 2

INSTRUCTIONS:
POCKETS (Make 2: 1 from each O’Go so pockets will match)
Ch 39.
1st Row: (RS). 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook. (Ch 1. Skip next ch. 1 sc in next ch) 9 times. (1 sc in next ch. Ch 1. Skip next ch) 9 times. 1 sc in last ch. Turn. 38 sts.
2nd Row: Ch 1. *1 sc in next sc. (1 sc in next ch-1 sp. Ch 1. Skip next sc) 8 times. 1 sc in next ch-1 sp. 1 sc in next sc. Rep from * once more. Turn.
3rd Row: Ch 1. *1 sc in next sc. (Ch 1. Skip next sc. 1 sc in next ch-1 sp) 8 times. Ch 1. Skip next sc. 1 sc in next sc. Rep from * once more. Turn.
Rep last 2 rows for Sc/Ch-1 pat for 7” [18 cm], ending on a WS row. Fasten off.
SHAWL (make 2 pieces alike)
With first O’Go, ch 37. With 2nd O’Go, ch 38. Note: Begin each O’Go on different stripe to achieve contrasting yarns (see photo).
Row 1: (RS). 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook. (Ch 1. Skip next ch. 1 sc in next ch) 18 times. With 2nd O’Go, (1 sc in next ch. Ch 1. Skip next ch) 18 times. 1 sc in last ch. Turn. 74 sts.
Row 2: With 2nd O’Go, ch 1. 1 sc in first sc. (1 sc in next ch-1 sp. Ch 1. Skip next sc) 17 times. 1 sc in next ch-1 sp. 1 sc in next sc. With first O’Go, 1 sc in next sc. (1 sc in next ch-1 sp. Ch 1. Skip next sc) 17 times. 1 sc in next ch-1 sp. 1 sc in last sc. Turn.
Row 3: With first O’Go, 1 sc in first sc. (Ch 1. Skip next sc. 1 sc in next ch-1 sp) 18 times. With 2nd O’Go, (1 sc in next ch-1 sp. Ch 1. Skip next sc) 18 times. 1 sc in last sc. Turn.
Rep last 2 rows for Sc/Ch-1 pat for 9” [23 cm], ending on a WS row. Fasten off yarn of 2nd O’Go. Do not fasten off yarn of first O’Go.
Place Pocket Lining:
Next Row: (RS). With first O’Go, 1 sc in first sc. (Ch 1. Skip next sc. 1 sc in next ch-1 sp) 8 times. Ch 1. Skip next sc. Work across sts of Pocket Lining: (1 sc in next ch-1 sp. Ch 1. Skip next sc) 9 times. 1 sc in next sc. Join 2nd O’Go. 1 sc in next sc. (Ch 1. Skip next sc. 1 sc in next ch-1 sp) 9 times. Skip next 38 sts of shawl. Ch 1. Skip next sc. (1 sc in next ch-1 sp. Ch 1. Skip next sc) 8 times. 1 sc in last sc. Turn. 74 sts.
Cont in pat until work from beg measures 32” [81.5 cm], ending on a WS row. Fasten off.
FINISHING
Join Shawl Pieces: With WS facing each other, align final rows of shawl Pieces (center back). Join yarn with sl st and work 1 row of (sc-ch 1) through both thicknesses to join. Fasten off.
Note: Use rem contrast shade for Pocket Edging (see photo).
Pocket Edging
1st Row: (RS). Join yarn with sl st in first skipped ch-1 sp of Pocket edge. Ch 1. 1 sc in same sp as sl st. (Ch 1. Skip next sc. 1 sc in next ch-1 sp) 8 times. Ch 1. Skip next sc. 1 sc in each of next 2 sc. (Ch 1. Skip next sc. 1 sc in next ch-1 sp) 8 times. 1 sc in last sc. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 1. [1 sc in next sc. (1 sc in next ch-1 sp. Ch 1. Skip next sc) 8 times. 1 sc in next ch-1 sp. 1 sc in next sc] twice. Turn.
Row 3: Ch 1. [1 sc in next sc. (Ch 1. Skip next sc. 1 sc in next ch-1 sp) 8 times. Ch 1. Skip next sc. 1 sc in next sc] twice. Turn.
Rep last 2 rows once more, then 2nd row once. Fasten off.
Sew sides of Pocket Edging in position. Sew sides of Pocket Lining in position on WS noting lower edge of Pocket Lining is approx 2” [5 cm] above lower edge.
Note: Use matching shades if possible for fringe (see photo).
Fringe: Cut lengths of yarn 14” [35.5 cm] long. Taking 3 strands tog, knot into fringe in every other st across both ends of shawl. Trim fringe evenly.
